Taking the time to soak in a bath has many health benefits. In simple terms, the ritual of running a warm bath and taking the time to soak in it is very relaxing. Additionally, research has now shown that regularly having a warm bath, several times a week over a number of years, can benefit the health of your heart.
It’s not just the relaxation that is beneficial but the heat from the water can improve circulation. And it doesn’t stop there, taking regular baths may help lower blood pressure and help you sleep better. But what about the benefit of adding Epsom salts to your bath?
What are Epsom salts?
When you pour Epsom salts into your bath, what is it that you’re adding? Epsom salt is named after a town in England called Epsom where mineral water was boiled down to obtain the ‘salt’ or magnesium sulfate.
Why are Epsom salts good?
People have been adding Epsom salts to their bath for hundreds of years and it is thought that the minerals are absorbed through the skin to bring many health benefits. Some of benefits it is claimed Epsom salts can assist with are:
Joint pain
Ingrown toenails
Insomnia
Sore muscles
Tired, swollen feet
If you have any concerns about adding Epsom salts to your bath, check with your doctor first.
How should you use Epsom salts?
Fill a bath with very warm, but not hot, water. While the water is running add one cup of Epsom salts, or the amount recommended by your doctor. It is thought that to get the full benefit of an Epsom salt bath you should bathe for 12 minutes but this may vary depending on the condition you are treating. If it’s ok to do so, we recommend soaking for 20 minutes.
We also recommend adding a half cup of Epsom salts to a basin of warm water to create your own foot spa at home. Then simply let your feet soak for 20 minutes to absorb the minerals.
